Together with a friend and fellow photographer Steven Scholten, we have put together a nice and almost entirely “rain free” itinerary around the city of The Hague. If you like photography, if you like to have a walk in The Hague or, quite simply, if you like to spend some quality time with a bunch of walking friends 😉 stop your shopping a little earlier next Saturday and join us. The basic idea is to walk around the city sharing thoughts , tips and experiences on photography but the photo walk is also a nice way to get to know, see and photograph perhaps new parts of The Hague and, of course, to meet and greet with interesting people.
The photo walk starts at 13.00, Steven and I will be at the Starbucks of Den Haag Central Station about twenty/fifteen minutes earlier so if your train arrives before 13.00 you’ll see us there.
Here is the program:
We’ll meet at 13.00 and, for whoever needs it, Steven and I will discuss on the basics of photography until 13.30 in the vicinity of our meeting point. If you already won an edition of the World Press Photo prize and know all about the theory here is your chance to arrive late or to still be in time and help explain the others how to make sense of the buttons beyond the comfortable green auto settings, so try to be on time anyway. Next we’ll move around Central Station which offers plenty of photo opportunities , it’s going to be busy at that time so we’ll capture a little of the vibrant spirit that a train station can offer besides the interesting architecture of the station itself, paired with the section right outside of the station and facing the new Babylon building. Next we’ll pass by the Muzenplein (click for the map) to reach the main white hall of Stadhuis van Den Haag (map here) which is The Hague city Hall, a beautiful modern building worth seeing. Steven knows the building inside out and will help us discover what we didn’t know about it so far. We’ll next move toward the shopping area of the city and enter the nieuwe Passage (click for the map) that leads us to the more classic section of the Passage and from there we’ll proceed toward the Binnenhof. We expect to close the walk more or less here but usually we have a drink at a nearby cafeteria at het Plein so if you don’t need to head home too early this will be a nice way to socialize around a coffee. From het Plein, heading back to the Central Station takes a little more than 5 minutes.
If you don’t know me yet, I like to link these initiatives to my FaceBoard project so I will have with me a portable version of my blackboard, just in case you also like to leave your sentence and you haven’t done it already thus leaving your mark on the FaceBoard project. Don’t miss it; but also don’t miss the opportunity to simply show up and hang out with us. We will not have a strict focus or subject in order to leave time to simply walk around and discover more about urban portraiture, architecture and street photography.
Take with you any camera you have, never mind the model. The only technical requirement is that you know how to switch on your camera and can recognize some of the buttons at the back without opening the user manual. After all, you know what they say: the best camera is the camera you have with you. So, anything from a point and shoot to a view camera (on wheels) will do.
See you there and yes, it’s free!
